January 'Reading Picturebooks with Authors' Event
On January 16th, at 3pm. The 29th 'Reading Picture Books with Authors' event opened. (Hosted by KBBY, Beautiful Store)
It is located at the Beautiful Store bookstore at the first basement of the Sejong parking building.
First, the gayageum trio El et Nous came to perform the traditional Korean song <Arirang> at the 'Reading Picturebooks with Authors' event.
Their ever-improving musical talents never fail to impress, and we look forward to their next performance.
Then, musical group The Little Musicians had a strings performance, playing songs <Let It Go> and <Polar Bear>.
Then, international storyteller Mrs. Alicia Bang told the story <Making Dumplings with Big-Handed Grandma>, written by Insun Chae and illustrated by Ukbae Lee. Using props and having children from the audience participate, Mrs. Alicia Bang carried us all on the big-handed grandmother’s venture to create delicious dumplings, as many do for the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday.
Children in the audience were able to act as characters in the story, helping the others follow along with the storyline and practicing basic English.
Next, childrens’ book author Rury Lee introduced himself and his book, <The Black Nose>. Rury Lee told the audience of how he was learning about polar bears when he had discovered that their greatest weakness in the vast expanses of snow were in fact their small black noses. Lee had also learned that the polar bears were aware of their weaknesses and consequently used snow to cover their noses when hunting. Thus came the inspiration for his story <The Black Nose>, which follows a mother and baby polar bear who are almost caught by a hunter. Thankfully the two successfully hide from the hunter’s grasp as they cover each other’s noses, and the audience was touched by the short but sweet story.
Rury Lee also read his story <The Medicine that Makes One Smarter>, a comical tale of a foolish ostrich and a clever lamb. Lee’s variety of voices and vibrant energy while reading made the story all the more entertaining for everyone in the audience.
Afterwards the children were given paper to create polar masks. Younger children were given pre-made masks and pasted black noses onto them. Lastly, audience members were able to receive signatures and take Polaroid pictures with Rury Lee.
We look forward to having more special events where children will be able to interact with authors in the future.
